Nylon Grades & Density Values

Nylon (polyamide) is one of the most widely used engineering plastics, prized for its toughness, low friction, and excellent wear resistance. Density varies meaningfully across grades — using the wrong value leads to significant weight estimation errors.

Grade Abbreviation Density (g/cm³) Typical Use
Nylon 6 PA6 1.14 Gears, bearings, bushings, film
Nylon 6/6 PA66 1.15 Automotive parts, electrical connectors
Glass-Filled Nylon 30% PA66-GF30 1.37 Structural parts, housings, brackets
Cast Nylon MC Nylon 1.16 Large blocks, rods, sheaves, wear pads

How Nylon Weight Is Calculated

Weight Formula

Weight (g) = Volume (cm³) × Density (g/cm³)
For a sheet:
Volume = L (mm) × W (mm) × T (mm) ÷ 1000
For a rod:
Volume = π × (D/2)² × L (mm) ÷ 1000
For a tube:
Volume = π × ((OD/2)² − (ID/2)²) × L (mm) ÷ 1000

Nylon 6 vs Nylon 6/6 — What's the Difference?

Nylon 6 (PA6)

  • • Density: 1.14 g/cm³
  • • Better impact resistance
  • • Easier to process
  • • Higher moisture absorption
  • • Lower melting point (~220°C)

Nylon 6/6 (PA66)

  • • Density: 1.15 g/cm³
  • • Higher stiffness and strength
  • • Better heat resistance
  • • Lower moisture absorption
  • • Higher melting point (~265°C)

Note on Glass-Filled Nylon

Glass fiber reinforcement increases density from ~1.14 to ~1.37 g/cm³ at 30% fill — a 20% increase. This significantly affects weight estimates. Always verify the glass fiber percentage with your supplier's datasheet for critical applications.
