Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate plastic sheet weight?
For metric: Weight (g) = Length (mm) × Width (mm) × Thickness (mm) ÷ 1000 × Density (g/cm³). For example, a 1000mm × 500mm × 12mm HDPE sheet at 0.955 g/cm³: (1000 × 500 × 12) ÷ 1000 × 0.955 = 5,730 g (5.73 kg). For imperial dimensions, the calculator converts automatically to provide accurate results.
What is the heaviest plastic sheet material?
PTFE (Teflon) sheets are the heaviest common plastic at 2.17-2.23 g/cm³ — roughly twice the weight of HDPE or polypropylene sheets. POM/Delrin (1.41 g/cm³) and rigid PVC (1.38-1.41 g/cm³) are also among the denser sheet materials. This high density provides enhanced properties like chemical resistance but increases material costs and weight.
What is the lightest plastic sheet material?
Polypropylene (PP) sheets are the lightest structural plastic at 0.90-0.91 g/cm³. UHMWPE (0.93 g/cm³), LDPE (0.91-0.93 g/cm³), and HDPE (0.94-0.96 g/cm³) are also lighter than water and will float. These materials minimize weight and material costs in large sheet applications like tank liners, cutting boards, and marine components.
Which plastic sheets are food safe?
Natural HDPE, polypropylene, PTFE, and POM/Delrin sheets are FDA compliant for food contact per 21 CFR 177. HDPE is the most common for cutting boards and food processing equipment due to its excellent chemical resistance and easy-to-clean surface. Always verify food compliance with your supplier for specific grades, as UV-stabilized or filled grades may not be food-approved.
